Many companies adopt their personal values into the workplace to help aide in the daily task that needs to be completed. Comparison of Booker T. Washington’s “Up from Slavery” and Web Dubois’ “The Souls of Black Folk”
Literary Devices in Rhetorical Writing During a time period when slavery had finally come to an end, African Americans still struggled as their opportunities for equality were next to nonexistent. In this time of hardship and unfair treatment, not many of those facing these adversities had the courage to speak out on their beliefs for change; Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois, however, did not possess such fears ââ¬â both thoroughly articulated their opinions and stood for what they believed was right.Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois shared a few commonalities ââ¬â both men were highly educated, for example, as well as they both expressed strong opposition against segregation. Washingtonââ¬â¢s Up from Slavery: An Autobiography and Duboisââ¬â¢ The Souls of Black Folk outline each of these powerful historical figuresââ¬â¢ views on segregation and what can be done to end it. Both of these works are excellent examples of rhetorical writing, possessing strong persuas ive arguments.A deeper examination of these texts can be done by a comparison of chapter fourteen of Washingtonââ¬â¢s work, entitled ââ¬Å"The Atlanta Exposition Address,â⬠and chapter three of Duboisââ¬â¢ The Souls of Black Folk ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others. â⬠Each of the texts contains persuasive arguments; however, each writerââ¬â¢s separate use of rhetorical strategies alludes to an effective expression of the intended theme. Booker T. Washingtonââ¬â¢s use of diction throughout ââ¬Å"The Atlanta Exposition Addressâ⬠reflected his level of education in a way that made him stand out in the African American community. His use of advanced rhetoric in comparison to the majority of the African American population made it easier for him to be noticed and heard. Judging by the text, it is apparent that all three modes of persuasion are present. By mentioning his reform-related accomplishments, Washington often appeals to logos in or der to establish his credibility and prominence as a leader; this appeal enhances his use of ethos, which reflects his desire to advance the African American race as a working class.Washington features an anecdote within the text, which acts as a metaphoric plea for African Americans to realize the opportunities manual labor could potentially hold for them. The phrase ââ¬Å"cast down your buckets where you areâ⬠is especially significant in his attempt to glorify common labor, referring to the abundance of resources present in this world (Washington 2).In sections five through seven, Washington repeatedly uses this phrase in the beginning of consecutive sentences, exemplifying anaphora; this literary device reiterates the significance of his words, strengthening his argument as to why freed slaves would benefit from common labor. Another literary device employed in ââ¬Å"The Atlanta Exposition Addressâ⬠is metonymy, which can be found in the phrase ââ¬Å"separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress,â⬠as well as in ââ¬Å"the organs of religious bodies, joined in the general chorus of condemnation or demands for retractionâ⬠(Washington 2,5).This representative ââ¬Å"part-of-a-wholeâ⬠strategy directly links the subject to the writerââ¬â¢s key points, thus creating a deeper connection and increasing their impact on the audience. A prominent literary device in ââ¬Å"Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Othersâ⬠is its structure. Dubois organizes the text in a way that maximizes the effectiveness of his message, which was to point out the flaws in Washingtonââ¬â¢s propositions. He begins by explaining Booker T. Washingtonââ¬â¢s success, after which he provides background information on African American progress in the 1800s and leads to his own criticism of Washington.By using words such as ââ¬Å"mistakes,â⬠ââ¬Å"shortcomings,â⬠ââ¬Å"bitterness,â⬠and similar ex pressions ââ¬â ââ¬Å"disappointment of displaced demagoguesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"spite of narrow mindsâ⬠ââ¬â- Dubois creates a negative tone, which mainly reflects his attitude toward Washington himself (Dubois 2). Dubois also employs the use of lists throughout the entire chapter, which are highly effective in convincing the reader to side with the writer. For example, in the text Dubois discusses the African Americans who have higher aspirations than those of Washington, but do not vocalize them; some of these unfulfilled wants are: ââ¬Å"1. the right to vote. / 2. civic equality. [and] 3. the education of youth according to ability (Dubois 5). By repeatedly featuring such lists throughout ââ¬Å"Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Othersâ⬠Dubois makes a compelling argument that there is much more to strive for than what has already been accomplished by Washington. Literary devices not only make the writer stand out as an individual, but also contribute immensely to the overall message of the text. In Booker T. Washingtonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Atlanta Exposition Address,â⬠his use of diction, modes of persuasion, anaphora, and metonymy are what help him establish a sense of authority and respect among his readers.WEB Duboisââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others,â⬠on the other hand, features a more complex structure and tone, setting apart his key points and allowing the reader to have a clearer understanding of his position in the argument against Washington. Washington wanted general occupations for African Americans, while Dubois was more concerned with equality; both of these great leaders were interested in the betterment of African Americansââ¬â¢ lives, and their excellent use of literary devices are what helped their writings become memorable pieces of American history.

Public international law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words
Public international law - Essay Example In establishing whether a political entity can be considered a state, these elements have to be primarily considered. Applying these elements to the assessment of Kosovo, however, is not as simple due to a host of issues involved in its bid for statehood. Nevertheless, these primary elements shall first be considered in assessing Kosovoââ¬â¢s claim to statehood. One of the elements of statehood is population. Population refers to the ââ¬Å"a group of people that live in the same land or regionâ⬠. In order for an entity to fulfil this requirement of statehood, its people must settle themselves at a definite place. There is an element of permanency to this population where the people are not likely to fall apart but can be expected to persist for a period of time . As far is Kosovo is concerned, it fulfils this requirement of statehood as it has a group of people living in a specific place and their population is sufficient to support state processes. Shared ethnic traditions and religions are not important elements within this group of people for as long as there are sufficient commonalities in terms of language, traditions, values, and beliefs to support harmonious relations with each other. As far as Kosovo is concerned, they share common beliefs, languages, and values as a people, with majority of the people being Albanians, speakin g in the Albanian, Serbian, Turkish, and Roma languages. Some of them are Muslims, Serbian Orthodox, and Catholics. These qualities provide sufficient groupings and commonalities among the people, groupings which are normally expected of any state or political entity. Population as an element of statehood has to be evaluated in terms of territory and government. Scholars highlight the fact that population is one of the more important elements of the state because territory and government elements are present only as a means of serving the population4. Territory defines an area which is well-defined, an area which is inhabited by the people of a state. It is usually defined by its physical borders which have long been defined by kings, emperors, and other significant government officials5. The Encyclopedia of Public International Law also defines territory as a crucial element of statehood because government authorities are endowed with the right and authority to ââ¬Å"take measures in that specific areaâ⬠6. Governments have exclusive control over their territories, one which cannot legally be intruded on by other states and political entities and states. As far as Kosovo is concerned, it also fulfils this element of statehood, as it has a defined territory where its population is based and upon which it can support its people. Government is also another element of statehood. In general, governments are made up of individuals who have been chosen by the people or by other authorities to carry out political functions and to manage state affairs7. Based on the international perspective, governments are independent entities which enforce authority over a certain population living in a territory8. Governments are usually decided by the general population and in areas where democratic processes are in place, these government officials represent the interests of the people, enforce rules, and implement policies. Various states have varying governments, and each of these types of government is mostly fashioned to fit the needs of the people. Governments have end goals in mind and most of these goals relate to providing common goods to

Employment Relations in the United Kingdom Essay
Employment Relations in the United Kingdom - Essay Example In fact, by 1910, trade unions had the authority to engage in strikes, industrial actions and mass protests, without running the risk of prosecution for any damages resulting from such acts. At the time, there was minimal regulation of safety and health standards for workplaces, with trade unions taking up the role of championing for such rights. With European nation having colonies around the world, the economic context was quite favourable (McCrudden, 2007:259). Acquisition of raw materials, cheap labour and a huge market for industrial products was the defining feature of the European economy at the time. As such, the rise of trade unions, with minimal control from the respective central governments was a common figure. In the United Kingdom, the law at the time allowed for industrial action between employers and their employees, without any interference by the state (Nick, 2010: 111). Perhaps, this was a sort of ââ¬Å"immunityâ⬠from the provisions of the prevalent common l aw, which does not recognise such rights. The United Kingdom was among the very first countries to institute industrial relations in its systems (Lewis, 1983: 271). Since this development, the UK has seen a major turn of events over the time, to the present day state of affairs, in the employment and labour market. Perhaps, modern day industrial relations have their basis and growth in the Great Britain, dating back to the early twentieth century. Right from the start of the industrial revolution, the UK has played a great role in modelling labour and employment relations around the globe. In fact, any literature or study, which does not refer to the industrial revolution, will have difficulties in explaining labour relations in any part of the world. In the early parts of the twentieth century, the relations in the industrial sector relied on regulation for the purposes of controlling the wage conflicts between employers and their staff, and the steep competition between industry p layers as well. The result was creation of the first industrial relations regulation, primarily focusing on addressing the twin problems above (Darlington & Lyddon, 2001: 53). After the world war, there was an increase in the need to produce more for the war-ravaged economy. However, pertinent issues around wages, extraneous working conditions, and deteriorated working environments were a major concern among many industries. With this scenario, in 1968 trade unions came into play, as a channel through which employees in all industries and firms could have level bargaining grounds (Singh, 2005: 165). With these unions, the landscape of industrial labour relation begun to change dramatically, as employees got more power to champion for their rights, especially on wages and working conditions. Trade unions played a major role in determining employment relations in the United Kingdom. The British labour relations fall under three categories, over the last century. Firstly, the volunteer philosophy is an integral aspect of the growth of collective bargaining for workers. Secondly, there was the establishment of trade unions, whose mandate was to champion for the wages, and minimum responsibility of the employers to their employees (Heery, 2010: 80). This was particularly crucial in creation of an independent entity, free from state influence on the affairs of the work place. This development kept the state away from active engagement in the employment

Cyber Insecurity - Research Paper Example In fact, as part of globalization and for that matter technology, communication and commerce have been more enhanced than they used to be before. But as much as we talk of the advantages of globalization, it is also important to have a look at what the repercussions of globalization and for that matter influx of technology have been on the larger population of the world. Cybersecurity is a term that is often used to represent the kind of protection given to personal information and digital documents. In his article ââ¬Å"Winning the fight against cyber crimesâ⬠, Lurrent (2012) argues that the need for cybersecurity has increased and become timely mainly because of increases of activities of illegal cyber operations. By this, reference is being made to the numerous acts of cyber attacks that are launched in the field of information systems. In the use of both personal and organized information systems, reports of information thief, virus attacks and other forms of information irregularities have been reported on a daily basis. Some of these are so serious that they easily result in people losing thousands of dollars especially when the bank details of users are tapped by cybercriminals. As much as these acts of cyber insecurity increase, there is the need for advanced countermeasures that can put the minds of end users at rest. In his article â â¬Å"Countermeasures for cybersecurityâ⬠, Deritck (2011) clearly states that unless pragmatic steps are taken to give total protection to users of the internet and other information systems against cyber insecurities of all forms, the interest that people have in using technology in advancing communication and commerce will bring down.Ã

Pursuing Criminal Syndicates - Essay Example In case of a terror attack, the doctorsââ¬â¢ lack of bioterrorism knowledge would cause worse situation (Frist, 2009). The other significant concern is the inability of the government to deliver medicines in case of a bioterrorism attack.
